The Duggar clan is known for their embracing of large families and lots of children. However, sometimes getting those little ones here can be fraught with trouble, even for the productive Duggars.
By now, fans of the Duggars and their most current show ‘Counting On’ likely are familiar with Jill Duggar and Derick Dillards’ youngest child, little Samuel. What some may not be aware of is that his start in July of 2017 was not entirely smooth sailing. Indeed, the birth took approximately 40 hours before Samuel was delivered by cesarean section on the afternoon of July 8th. Few pictures of the new arrival were posted by Jill following the birth until weeks later.
The reason for this may now be apparent with the addition of a picture of Derick and his mom, Carol Dillard Byrum, standing next to newborn Samuel who appears to be hooked up to various wires and a nasal tube. Another photograph appears on Instagram of a smiling Derick standing next to Samuel who is again hooked up to a nasal cannula and in an incubator. This may well explain the temporary lull in social media postings celebrating the newest family member. When complications arise following a birth, especially for those who already have well-known public profiles, it is not altogether uncommon for privacy to be sought in such difficult and trying times.
The current theory is that Samuel may have been suffering from Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), which can be best summarized as amniotic fluid in the lungs that fails to get dislodged and expelled as it typically does for babies who pass through the birth canal. It’s not altogether uncommon for this to be seen in infants that have been born via c-section. Care often entails close monitoring of vitals, oxygen, and possibly antibiotics among other supportive measures. Most cases resolve without protracted complications as the lungs clear and the fluid issue is absorbed or removed, as it did for a now healthy and thriving Samuel.
Knowing the often contentious nature of social media, Jill likely did not want to put such a sensitive and challenging occasion out there for the world to see and comment on. Who can really blame her for that? (Well, doubtless some would, but I digress.)
Doubtless, the Duggar news will continue, and fans and critics alike will have a lot to say about it.
